Viewfinder: The Western Kingdom

During my junior year, I spent a semester abroad in Morocco studying Arabic, multiculturalism and human rights. Though the country is small, it is home to diverse landscapes and peoples.

Around the village of Ouarzazate, where I captured this photo, many are of Berber origins and now profit from the allure of the Sahara Desert. As a visitor, I felt lost in the expanse of desert sands, but our guides navigated the dunes with the familiarity of generations.

They maintained an encouraging sense of humor as many in our group experienced their first camel rides. The ride was bumpy, but the sunset that met us at the end was one I will never forget.
