“Don’t forget your point of contact!” and “Snap that belly button!” shouted Major League Baseball Hall-of-Famer Tommy Lasorda as he stood beside the batting cage while player after Davidson player swung at practice pitches. A legend in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ franchise,Lasorda visited campus at the invitation of Head Baseball Coach Dick Cooke, who served under Lasorda as he coached the gold medal-winning U.S.A. team in the 2000 Olympics in Australia.
Lasorda spent an afternoon giving pointers to the Davidson team, and spoke more formally about his 60 years of big-league experience to about 250 baseball alumni, students, and community members in Duke Family Performance Hall. The visit raised more than $15,500 for baseball scholarships.
Lasorda thoroughly enjoyed his visit to Davidson, said Cooke. “He was enamored by our small town charm and felt very at home.”
