Graham Whittingt on ’14, from Memphis, Tenn., enjoys some well-earned Kuchen after placing 12th in Davidson’s annual Freshman Cake Race, a sweet tradition that kicks off the academic year. Whittington is among the 501 students in the Class of 2014—with just a few more men than women— who arrived in August from 38 states, the District of Columbia, and 26 other countries. More than 100 are recruited athletes, and 95 have a family tie to the college. During their crash course in the Davidson experience called Orientation, they met with advisers, frolicked at the Lake Campus, took a service walk through town, signed the Honor Code—and ran 1.7 miles in a race for cake.
