Fitness Gets a Green Light

Davidson unveiled its new “Green Gym” equipment in April, three elliptical machines that capture the energy of a workout and convert it to electricity that goes into the electrical grid of the Alvarez College Union.

The project is the brainchild of Alexis Valauri-Orton ’12, who received a $10,000 Brita Filter For Good grant and a Davidson College Green Grant to implement her idea. Built by PreCor, the elliptical machines were retrofitted by a Florida-based company, ReRev, to capture and convert the energy of a workout.

The machines live in the Nisbet Fitness Center on the first floor of the Alvarez College Union, where scores of students, faculty, and staff work out every day. When the machines debuted in early April, President Tom Ross ’72 was on hand in workout gear to give them a go. And keep the lights on.
